Del Cerro is an upscale community east of downtown San Diego, where many homes afford their owners sweeping canyon and distant mountain views to the east, and vistas that extend all the way to Coronado to the west. Many homes overlook San Diego State University, Mission Valley, San Carlos, La Mesa and Lake Murray.

Called "The Hill" by its residents, Del Cerro is bordered on the south by Interstate 8 and San Diego State University, on the east by Mission Trails Regional Park & San Carlos, on the west by Mission Valley.

Because of the views, Del Cerro real estate garners higher prices than its surrounding neighbors. A recent survey showed Del Cerro list prices averaging $45,000 higher than San Diego ($720,000 as compared to $675,000). Condos begin just under $200,000; detached homes begin at $400,000 and range up to $1.6 million. The 1950s-style homes have distinct architectural charm and large, well-maintained lawns; many residents are second-generation owners. Neighborhoods within Del Cerro include the wealthy Del Cerro Heights, Princess Del Cerro and Old Del Cerro.

Del Cerro residents enjoy easy access to I-8 and a quick commute to downtown as well as to the major shopping and entertainment areas of Mission Valley and Fashion Valley, and the beaches just a few miles further west. Within the community itself, Del Cerro Shopping Center is the major hub of shopping and dining. Public schools are a part of the San Diego City School District.
