Jacumba is an Indian word meaning hut by the water. The village is famous for its baths, fed by mineral springs. James McCoy established Jacumba in 1852. He built a fort to protect it from Indian attacks. Legend has it that he held off 500 Indians during one raid. Jacumba sits near the junction of Interstate 8 and State Highway 98, near the Mexican border.
