A bedroom community founded in 1888, La Mesa once was one of Southern California's boom towns. Referred to as the Pasadena of San Diego, it was an operating base for the construction of a railroad. Today, this community of hillsides offers custom homes with various vantage points and views of east and western areas of the city and county. Most are tract developments, but there is a selection of older homes. Community attractions include the Mount Helix cross, where Easter Sunrise services are held annually, and an Oktoberfest celebration.
